The reason any business starts is because there is a belief in a revenue opportunity.
Once that opportunity is proven to exist, the next step is to ensure that its revenue is reliable.
Thereafter, as the business ‘machine’ is being built, the owners have to balance all of the costs associated with running the business, against the income derived from servicing the opportunity.
If the business can generate a surplus of the income over the costs (a profit), it will likely seek to find more of that. Ultimately this drives employment, and solves a problem in the market which improves the economy and adds value to the system. When profits are high others are attracted to compete for a share and eventually this provides choice and lower prices to the consumer.
The value to the consumer evaporates when businesses cease to exist due to lack of profit.
